Why Gateway Church?
We’re so glad you’ve found us and we totally believe God has bought you here intentionally! Right now, we’re in an exciting season of building friendships, community, and vision as we prepare to officially launch Sunday services in Cairns in February 2026.
Cairns is one of Australia’s least religious cities, ranking 6th in the nation. In the 2021 Census, more than 139,000 locals said they had no faith at all—highlighting a city in need of hope and Jesus’ grace.
Our heartbeat is simple: we believe Jesus’ grace changes everything, and through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit, lives, streets, and whole cities can be transformed. From Cairns to beyond, our vision is to see people encounter God’s love in a real and life-changing way.
In this season, we’re gathering people together across the city—creating opportunities to connect, dream, and build for what’s ahead. We’d love for you to be part of the journey and attend one of our Gateway Gatherings coming up.

MEET JAMES & NICKY HEWITT
They’ve been married 16 years, have 3 kids, and made the big move from leading churches in Melbourne to Cairns in 2023. By 2024 they’d bought a house and jumped into teaching, James runs the Christian Studies program at a local Christian college and is the creator or Kairos Media (www.kairosmedia.com.au), a 100% free Christian media channel for Schools and young adults. Nicky teaches Math at a Cairns school and leads the church with James.
Since 2012, they’ve been pastoring churches in Brisbane and Melbourne, helping people grow in faith and discover a good God! In 2023, they felt God calling them north to Cairns (aka the gateway to FNQ) to settle in and launch a brand new church. After a season of settling their family and securing work, they are now excited about launching Gateway Church.
They’re pumped for what God’s going to do in FNQ over the next decade and beyond!
Also… they’re into sport, good coffee, and seriously good slow cooked BBQ!

What we believe!
WE BELIEVE that the Bible is God’s Word. It is accurate, authoritative and applicable to our every day lives.
WE BELIEVE in one eternal God who is the Creator of all things. He exists in three Persons: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. He is totally loving and completely holy.
WE BELIEVE that sin has separated each of us from God and His purpose for our lives.
WE BELIEVE that the Lord Jesus Christ as both God and man is the only One who can reconcile us to God. He lived a sinless and exemplary life, died on the cross in our place, and rose again to prove His victory and empower us for life.
WE BELIEVE that in order to receive forgiveness and the ‘new birth’ we must repent of our sins, believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and submit to His will for our lives.
WE BELIEVE that in order to live the holy and fruitful lives that God intends for us, we need to be baptised in water and be filled with the power of the Holy Spirit.
WE BELIEVE that God has individually equipped us so that we can successfully achieve His purpose for our lives which is to worship God, fulfil our role in the Church and serve the community in which we live.
WE BELIEVE that God wants to heal and transform us so that we can live healthy and prosperous lives in order to help others more effectively.
WE BELIEVE that our eternal destination of either Heaven or hell is determined by our response to the Lord Jesus Christ.
WE BELIEVE that the Lord Jesus Christ is coming back again as He promised.
